Football players and coaches at BYU have a new appreciation for military ideals and philosophy, thanks to the emphasis placed on it by offensive coordinator Jeff Grimes.

“I like reading all sorts of things on war and battle because really that is what we are in in football, a battle where we have a defined piece of ground that we are trying to win possession of,” Grimes said at BYU football Media Day on June 22. “Whether you are talking about defeating an opponent on the military field of battle or whether you are trying to gain a first down on the 40-yard line, the element of surprise and not allowing your opponent to know what is coming next are things that I really believe in.”
